What is the role of a sponsor?
Because the SMPP is so highly individualized, it is critical that each applicant
work with a sponsor who can help shape the program to his or her needs. The
participants who benefit the most from the program are those whose sponsors
help align their program goals with those of their organizations. A sponsor
must be from the same organization as the participant, and is typically a direct
supervisor. The role of a sponsor is to help determine goals, provide guidance
and evaluate progress throughout. The sponsor and the ITSMA mentor together
form the participant's advisory team.

What is a sponsor
expected to do?
The sponsor needs to stay actively engaged throughout the 6-month program period
in order to help the participant succeed. The key tasks of a sponsor are:
- Authorize payment of the fees for the SMPP and potentially other courses
and workshops.
- Advise and guide the participant throughout the program.
- Work with the participant (and ITSMA mentor) to create a Personal Development
Plan.
- Identify an appropriate Action Learning Project and then advise the
participant (with the ITSMA mentor) during its implementation.
- Review the participant's Final Paper (with the ITSMA mentor) and give
final approval that the program requirements have been successfully completed.

How
will the program benefit my organization?
As an adjunct to in-house training programs, the SMPP cultivates specialized
skills and knowledge that are both critical and in short supply industry-wide.
The program, which is based on ITSMA's unique expertise in services marketing,
helps your employees bring those leading-edge practices into your marketing
operations. Longer term, your demonstrated commitment to employee development
will undoubtedly help increase your retention rates of valuable, high-performance
individuals.
